Mission Statement
Breaking through is a common term for shattering the status quo and fighting the system. However, instead of breaking through, we aim to take a more holistic approach towards instilling change by creating bridges to our goals. Bridging calls us to the concept of intersectionality. At this intersection is where amazing and miraculous change and growth can happen. To that point, Bridging Through Bars’ mission is to facilitate, create and manage rehabilitation, re-entry, and diversion programs for system impacted individuals including those that are incarcerated, on parole, as well as developing youth. Our programs are fueled with our love for the curative aspects of music, art, agriculture, and other expressive activities that help bridge the gap between not only those who are incarcerated but also those who are imprisoned by illness, impoverishment, and loneliness.
Projects
Our first project – creating housing for incarcerated people who are eligible for release under the CARES Act due to COVID-19 but don’t have a proper home confinement plan. The global COVID-19 pandemic is devastating not only the outside world but also incarcerated individuals. In prison, people are 550 times more likely to contract COVID-19 and 300 times more likely to die from the virus. Currently, there are almost 9000 cases of coronavirus reported amongst prisoners in the Federal prison system. This poses not only as a huge threat to the lives of incarcerated people in America, but also to the public as almost 14,000 cases of coronavirus are reported amongst prison staff.
